Project Overview
This project aimed to address the concerning issue of low adoption rates of the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program (NBCSP) kit in Australia. With the overarching goal of reducing the mortality rates associated with bowel cancer, our team embarked on a comprehensive initiative leveraging user experience (UX) design principles. The primary objective was to enhance the accessibility and usability of the NBCSP kit, thereby encouraging more Australians to participate in bowel cancer screening. By streamlining the process and providing a digital platform, we aimed to empower users to take proactive steps towards their health.
Approach
Research and Analysis: We conducted in-depth research to understand the barriers preventing individuals from using the NBCSP kit effectively. This involved analysing existing data, user surveys, and interviews to identify pain points and preferences pertaining to the current kit design and communication methods. Based on the insights gathered, we iteratively designed a digital web application focused on user-centric principles. This included features such as MyGov ID integration for seamless login, intuitive test result access, animated instructions for kit usage, digital participant forms, and integrations with HotDoc for scheduling appointments.
Prototyping and Testing: We then developed prototypes of the web app application and conducted rigorous testing with target users to gather feedback. Iterative refinements were made based on user insights to ensure an optimal user experience. Upon finalising the design, we then planned to collaborate with developers to implement the digital web app, ensuring seamless integration with existing systems and platforms. This is still in progress.
Conclusion
Through a strategic combination of UX design principles, iterative development, and a user-centric approach, we successfully addressed the challenge of low adoption rates of the NBCSP kit in Australia. The project not only aimed to improve accessibility and usability for Australians, but also made significant strides towards saving lives by promoting early detection and prevention of bowel cancer.
